Waiting For Godot
Directed by
What was that all about? Is he ever coming? Will we ever see Godot? One must first understand Beckett and then maybe, just maybe, you will begin to understand Waiting For Godot. Beckett's sly joke, at the expense of his own play - or rather at the expense of those in the audience who expect theatre always to consist of events progressing towards some sort of climax, comes from within the play itself when Estragon's (in the form of a) complaint is uttered in the first act, "Nothing happens, nobody comes, nobody goes, it's awful." Beckett takes such a simple idea and makes it contain the answers to all the big questions. If nothing else, the play will make you think about how we pass time, how we process information and how we focus our own lives -- that is why the play has achieved worldwide literary status. All of that aside. The acting in this production was absolutely superb. Not only was the dialog presented with precise timing but the facial expressions reflected the feelings of the dialog. A truly enjoyable experience. One additional plaudit - the "Tree" was featured in the Jan-Feb 2003 issue of the Michigan CallBoard, the newsletter of the Community Theatre Association of Michigan. In that issue is was stated that Ev Hunter and family went searching the countryside to find a tree for the set. After finding one and securing permission to cut it down they then faced the problem of getting it into the theatre. The tree had to be cut into parts which would fit through the theatre door, then reassembled on stage. |
