A...My Name Is Alice Directed by Carol Witherbee Assistant Director - Evelyn Hunter By Joan Micklin Silver and Julianne Boyd Alpena Civic Theatre did something a little different - two musicals in one season. "A ...My Name is Alice" was a lively, laugh-filled review that guaranteed to cure those late spring doldrums. Though the show was billed as "a compilation of songs, monologues and poems (we came to expect these and in the end were laughing even before the reading began), that portrayed the pains and pleasures of womanhood from that first real date to the loss of a husband," it was not a show for women only. The men in the audiences found plenty to laugh about as well. It consisted of numerous comedy sketches and songs where cast members got to really showcase the divesity of thier talents. A sophisticated and bawdy anthem to the power of women everywhere that The New York Times called “a boodle of laughs,” this bluesy, jazzy, fun-filled award-winner was a celebration of self-discovery and empowerment that revealed unique comic insights into the lives of contemporary women – friends, rivals, sisters, and even members of a ladies’ basketball team! Everyone was represented, from a housewife, to an executive, and to a famous blues singer and her psychiatrist.
